Provincial Awards

PASSTRAK ATHLETES HONORED WITH PROVINCIAL AWARDS Each year Athletics Alberta, (the governing body for track and field in Alberta), holds an awards banquet to honour the top track and field athletes of the year. This years event took place in Edmonton on February 18th and all the best track and field athletes in Alberta were present right from the grassroots level up to and including athletes who took part in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Three Passtrak athletes were among the recipients of this years awards. They were being honoured for their accomplishments during the 2016 outdoor track and field season. Naoise Gelber from Pincher Creek and Ashley Watson from Cowley were ranked in the top ten female athletes in the Tyke Division. This includes all athletes who were under 10 years old in 2016. The award is for being in the top ten best all around athlete in Alberta in that age group. Bronwyn Gelber from Pincher Creek received the top ten award for her performances during the 2016 outdoor season in the Peewee age group. Peewee athletes are those who are 10 or 11 years old during 2016.

2017 PROVINCIAL INDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR TYKES, PEEWEE’S AND BANTAM’S Eight Passtrak athletes travelled to Edmonton to take part in their Indoor Provincial Track and Field Championships on February 18th & 19th. Carson Hay competed in the Tyke boys age group which includes all athletes under the age of 10. He ran the fastest 60 metres of his life recording a new personal best of 13.48 seconds. He then went on to set a new Passtrak club record for his age group in the long jump where he spanned 2.24 metres. In his final event, the shot put, he again set a new club record with a toss of 2.66 metres. Rowan Watson was also in the Tyke boys age group. He ran the fastest 60 metres of his life as well and crossed the finish line in 11.13 seconds. He then cleared 2.68 metres in the long jump and heaved the shot put 2.70 metres. Ashley Watson ran the 60 metres in 11.00 seconds in the Peewee Girls Division which includes athletes who are 10 and 11 years old. She then leaped 3.28 metres in the long jump which set a new Passtrak club record for her age group and earned her 5th place out of the 26 athletes who competed. She finished her competition with a 4.38 metre performance in the shot put. Keenan Parsons had the same 3 events as the others and was in the Peewee Boys group. He ran the fastest 60 metres of his life in 9.78 seconds for 7th place. His best long jump measured 3.51 metres also good for 7th place. His shot put topped out at 5.58 metres which placed him 9th. Sawyer Sawatzky, also a Peewee Boy, ran 11.11 seconds in the 60 metres and measured 3.42 metres in the long jump. His best event of the meet was the shot put where he improved by 68 cm out to 6.61 metres which placed him 2nd out of the 24 athletes who competed. Jack Bailey is in the Bantam age group which includes athletes who are 12 & 13 years old. He ran his 60 metres in 11.25 seconds and cleared 1.00 metres in the high jump. He then recorded a 4.31 metre heave in the shot put. Paige Richards is in the Midget Girls Division which includes 14 & 15 year olds. She is coming off a month of no training due to an injury as well as wisdom tooth removal so she was only registered in one event to test her fitness level. The test was very successful as she tied her life time best performance in the 60 metres at 8.87 seconds. Ethan Richards was moved up to the Open age group because there weren’t any events offered in his regular age group. Running against “The Big Guys” allowed him to run the second fastest 60 metres of his life in 7.54 seconds. He then produced the best long jump of his life at 5.44 metres which placed him 4th. He then ran the fastest 300 metre race of his life clocking a 38.91 second result.
